At St. John Vianny School, we know there are many important benefits to learning a second language. In addition to improving focus, memorization, and writing skills, studying another language also helps students communicate with others and appreciate different cultures.
Our students begin taking formal Spanish classes in first grade and continue all the way through 8th grade. Spanish classes are taught by the same teacher, which allows for a gradual and continuous learning of speaking, writing, reading and listening skills. We have received excellent feedback on our Spanish program from both alumni who have continued their Spanish studies in high school and their high-school Spanish instructors.
From 1st through 4th grades, students learn the language through a program called “Risas y Sonrisas” (Laughter and Smiles). It utilizes a hands-on approach intereconnected with content-rich curriculum. The students can access all the materials through an interactive online program, which allows them to practice with catchy songs, creative visual aids, posters, fun games, videos, practical conversations, skits, and more. They also have many resources at their disposal on the instructor's Spanish website.
From 5th through 8th grade, the “Español Santillana” program is used. Students study vocabulary and grammar skills in the context of a story with challenges, and learn about cultural aspects of Spanish-speaking countries. The students use Quizlet to practice vocabulary and spelling, and they are also able to earn extra credit with Duolingo.
